I am trying to do LCA on revit projects and our walls, floor and roofs are modeled as masses, the correct thickness, but it’s a solid mass. So when i’m running a material takeoff of the model it has a lot more material than would actually be there. Has anyone figured out how to create a formula or a process to account for the actual volume of the studs. Using the spacing or whatever. I’ve tried everything I can find.

Tally will do some of this for you. I’m assuming your using a different tool. But yes, I know that other modelers (e.g., Oneclick users) will create their own calculations to estimate material takeoffs when things are modeled as masses. I don’t have any easy resources to recommend but maybe some of our Oneclick users can chime in.

We use OneClick and they have average steel stud OneClick EPDs for a variety of thicknesses and spacings. If you select the EPD with the known stud thickness + spacing, you can enter the wall area, then switch to volume or weight and OneClick will give you a default conversion.
For example: 3 5/8" @ 16" OC steel studs - 100 sf = 88 lbs = 30 cu ft
Good enough for an industry average model, but best to get the actual quantities for the as-built model.

Search query: “steel stud” → structural steel and steel profiles → steel stud framing…
