CA Adopts Embodied Carbon law for buildings!

Last Friday, Governor Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 2446 (AB2446) which phases in a 20% reduction by 2030 and a final 40% reduction by 2035 in embodied carbon in building materials, using a to be determined 2026 baseline. Like many things in CA this is under the jurisdiction of the California Air Resources Board (CARB). There are outs, of course, but as a first step this is impressive and helpful. Now who will follow? Lobbyists told us that there was opposition early in the legislative process from the building community, but over time all opposition was removed. We were one of the sponsors of this legislation.
