Hi every one,
I was wondering if anyone comes across any statistical data in the literature about the average lifespan of different building types (retail, residential, commercial, etc)?
Thank you in advance!

The most commonly cited source that I have seen comes from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (1925 - 1997).
Kapur et al 2008 also summarizes the BEA data nicely in Table 1:
There’s a good bit of research out there from the Industrial Ecology perspective. Global values were summarized by Deetman et al. 2020 (See Table S.1. in the supplementary information)
Hope that helps!
Sound great- thanks really for your help!
All the best,
Mehdi
This was the most recent document I found for residential construction:
Aktas, C., & Bilec, M. (2012). Impact of lifetime on US residential building LCA results. International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment , 337-349.
It shows the average lifespan of a home in the US is 61 years.
Hi,
an interesting European study is also the following:
Østergaard, N., Thorsted, L., Miraglia, S., Birkved, M., Rasmussen, F., Birgisdóttir, H., Kalbar, P. and Georgiadis, S., 2018. Data Driven Quantification of the Temporal Scope of Building LCAs. Procedia CIRP , 69, pp.224-229.
Thanks for sharing this.
