Public Comment Opportunity for the Intl. Building Code

Writing to let you know about an upcoming opportunity to provide in person public comment regarding embodied carbon in building code.

What: New Buildings Institute submitted an International Building Code (IBC) code change proposal (S-178-22 on page 835) to the International Code Council (ICC) to be considered in the 2024 IBC. The proposal addresses embodied carbon requirements for concrete, steel, wood products, flat glass, and masonry units.

Why: Code updates can be a lengthy process, but they can impact embodied carbon emissions in a significant way helping building industry stakeholders meet state and federal climate goals. With this public comment period, there is an opportunity to raise awareness of this important topic and to ask ICC members to consider embodied carbon proposals in code.

When: The IBC public comments should be posted any day now. The schedule is out and based on this, we’re expecting the code to be heard on September 15 or 16th. You can show up at the Kentucky International Convention Center Louisville, KY to submit your comment in person. I will follow up with more details once we know which exact day it will be heard.
